If your goal is to complete the entire VIT, then you can undertake an epic hike and complete it as a “through-hike”.
2018 saw the first hiker to complete the Trail, with its many deficiencies and two major gaps at that time. This was Isobel Glover of Victoria who left her front door on June 20 and arrived at Cape Scott two months later. A through-hiker should be thinking in terms of at least 5 weeks to over 2 months for their epic journey. Through-hikers should consider having some kind of support team, which would render different modes of travel feasible (on foot, by bike) on some sections, as well as allow for periodic re-supply and assistance as required.
The VIT can be hiked in either direction. If travelling south to north, start must be delayed until mid-June in most years to avoid lingering snowpack in the Beauforts (Section 3). Travelling north to south works well with a start in early September, so that if the Fall rains come early in October, you will at least be finishing in the drier climates of the south end of the Island.
